As a mother of two daughters who had a milk intolerance when young, traditional hot chocolate drinks were sadly out of the question, so some culinary innovation was needed! A few bars of dark chocolate, some spoonfuls of high quality unrefined sugar and lots of soya milk later; the idea of a delicious, natural hot chocolate drink was born. In a moment of madness, I realised that there could be a business here and Choc-affair was created!
Friends and family were drafted-in for tasting sessions and how they protested inbetween mouthfuls of delicious hot chocolate! Their opinions were sought and Fair trade was mentioned.This was the key; a way in which to run our business in an ethical manner, whilst enjoying a thoroughly delicious range of fairtrade chocolates - what more could you ask for?
After 3 years and a stone heavier in weight I gained a new business partner! Ian is firstly my brother in law (there is nothing like keeping it in the family!) and comes from a retail background with 23 years experience in the field. He had been nagging me for years to grow the business, so I eventually told him to put his money where his mouth was and invest in the business, and to my surprise he did!
What we believe and do
Choc-affair is not a large corporate business, disguising itself as an artisan chocolate maker with green ideals. We are what we say we are and our ethics matter to us. We are a small family run business that manufacture and package everything by hand, only ever working with high quality, certified Fairtrade chocolate.
We try, wherever possible to re-use all that we can, so paper is used through both sides of the printer for in-house printing and all scraps of chocolate are eaten, never thrown away!! This way Linda can insist her weight gain is all for a good cause for the planet! If your order arrives in a less than perfect outer box, it's because we always try to use recycled boxes to post out in. It hurts our feelings to see boxes sent to be recycyled when we are always ready to use them. So if you ever see a few ladies in the York area hunting through the boxes at supermarkets or leaving a store with a trolly, piled high with empty boxes, it is probably us in salvage mode!! We aren't perfect, by any means, but we are trying to have a positive impact with the way we do things.
