Maple Bacon and Chocolate Toasted Cheese Sandwich

A toasted bacon, cheese and chocolate sandwich on a plate

With our new charitable Chocolate & Co café venture, I’ve been working on the menu and experimenting with some recipes, to try give us a little point of difference, whilst balancing that with mainstream tastes of course.

One of our specialities is our maple bacon and cheese toasted sandwich, which if I do say so myself is absolutely delicious. I cannot take credit for this, as I came across this on Something about Sandwiches which is packed full of delicious recipe ideas- so make sure you do check it out.  For this to be chocolate related, I thought it worth trying to see if the addition of the chocolate complimented the final dish.

So, if you’re making this at home without a panini machine, you’re going to need a frying pan and the following ingredients.

Ingredients for making two of these incredibly tasty sandwiches.

  • 4 slices of Butchers English Smoked back Bacon (we use Bromwich Family Butchers, as we love their bacon and homemade sausages)
  • 2 tbsp Maple Syrup
  • 1 tbsp Dark Brown Sugar
  • 1 tsp Dijon Mustard (we used English)
  • Balsamic Vinegar
  • Pinch of Cayenne Pepper
  • 4 slices of thick sliced White Bloomer Bread – try your local bakery for this, as it does add to the quality of your final sandwich
  • 2 slices of Applewood Cheese or equivalent (this does make a difference to the taste of the sandwich, so do try to use this)
  • 100g Cheddar and Mozzarella Mix
  • 40g Choc Affair Dark Chocolate Buttons
  • Butter for spreading and frying

Method:

  1. In a small pot whisk together the maple syrup, brown sugar, mustard, balsamic vinegar and a pinch of cayenne pepper.
  2. Line a baking tray with aluminium foil then place a wire rack on top. Space out bacon strips on top of wire rack and generously brush both sides with the maple glaze.
  3. Bake in the oven at 350F/175C for 20-30 mins or until nice and crispy, turning over halfway through the cooking. Timings may vary so keep an eye on it and remove when ready.
  4. Melt the chocolate in a 30 second burst in the microwave, stirring in the last few unmelted buttons, leave to one side while you prepare the sandwich.
  5. Butter the bread on one side of each slice and place two slices of bread in a large frying pan butter side down, but with no heat yet.  Top with the Applewood cheese and then the maple bacon, before brushing the bacon with a thin layer of the melted chocolate, then top off with the cheddar/mozzarella mix. Add a second slice of bread and spread with butter. Turn on heat to a medium and fry each side until golden with the all the cheese melted in the centre, so it is oozing melted cheese and golden brown.

Cut in half to serve and enjoy this taste sensation! You’ll never choose a traditional bacon sandwich again…
